Next edition: 19-22 January 2010

We would like to invite you to participate in International Fair for Construction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment Bumasz, taking place every two years. The next edition will be held together with International Construction Fair Budma from January 19th, 2010, to January 22nd, 2010 in PoznaƄ, Poland.

Construction fair in 2010 will be held under the theme of balanced building. This means taking on ecology, economy and ergonomy principles, making use of balanced materials, the practice of safe building, and taking into account new technologies, e.g. while assessing the risk of engineering works and damages caused by climate change and air pollution. The fair is aimed to be an fot. Piotr Piosik_3647.JPGencouragement directed to constructors and constructing companies to use balanced construction methods and materials reducing noise, disturbances and waste in cities.

Robots in The Gym

Before they start mixing us drinks and folding our laundry, robots are going to do some seriously important work, like helping stroke victims.

Rice university engineers are launching a two-year program to test a new joystick-based device designed to help stroke victims recover faster. Patients use the joystick to try to move objects around on a screen, and the joystick pushes back when the patients err. The technology effectively tries to get things back in sync, teaching the hand to do what the brain is asking of it.

Several other labs are using robots for stroke-rehab, too, including an ankle-focused device like the one picture here. One MIT scientist envisions an entire gym stocked with robo-assistants.-Gregory Mone

Automaker Plans to Move Robots Into Homes

The robot business is getting serious. Toyota just announced plans to move several advanced robots into the marketplace by 2010, hoping these machines will help people in homes, factories and health-care facilities. The automaker revealed two new robots, a violin-playing humanoid and a kind of futuristic wheelchair called a "mobility robot." Additionally, Toyota says it will double the number of engineers it has working on these projects, and build a new research facility dedicated to the field. By 2020, the company hopes that robotics will be one of its core businesses.—Gregory Mone

Robot Round-Up

Robots are always a big crowd-pleaser at CES, and this year’s no exception. WowWee, known for its innovative but affordable ‘bots, just announced four new products that uphold its reputation. And Erector (yup, of Erector sets) brought out three follow-ups to last year’s popular Spykee, a build-it-yourself Wi-Fi robot that acts like a roving webcam. Go with WowWee if you want your artificial friend to run right out of the box, or with the Erector DIY kits if you like to work for your robot love.

Heavy Machinery

Modern heavy machinery can be almost awe-inspiring to see in action. Massive cranes, huge earthmovers, and even king-sized tractors have the ability to do work in capacities that are nearly unthinkable.

That vast size can look even more intimidating when we see what happens when things go a little wrong. In this gallery of impressive images, those sorts of mishaps are in great (literally) evidence, showing machines that have fallen, broken, or become hopelessly mired. There are a few images here that also show massive machines in strange-looking situations that just happen to be within the normal course of events, while still making for impressive photos.

Heavy machinery

The heavy machinery and transportation

The heavy machinery and transportation industries involve the repetitive handling and manipulation of large workpieces and assemblies. These activities are extremely hazardous and can result in lifting injuries and lifting-related injuries from reaching, bending, stretching, and other physical contortions.
This page shows how lifting and lifting-related injuries can be eliminated or reduced through the use of simple and inexpensive mechanical lifting and positioning equipment.

LA 2007: 1936 Mercedes-Benz 290 Roadster Special

Click on the image above to view in high-resolution

The SLR wasn't the only attention-grabbing roadster Daimler-Benz had on display at this year's LA show. Sitting front and center in between all the latest machinery from Mercedes was this unique classic, the 290 Special Roadster.

On loan from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA, the bright orange convertible was a one-off drophead version of the 290-series flagship sedan that debuted in February 1933 at the Berlin Motor Show. Taking the place in Benz's 30's line-up where the S-Class sits today, the 290 came in short- and long-wheelbase versions (for personal or chauffeured use) and adopted the company's then-new swing axle technology.

This convertible is one-of-a-kind, built in 1936. It packs a 68hp 2.8-liter straight six driving through a 3-speed transmission and wrapped in some truly classic sheetmetal that gives you an idea for where the guys at Wiesmann may have drawn their inspiration. Check out the gallery below for all the elegant curves and details.

New Claas harvest hub for west

CLAAS has expanded its specialist Harvest Centre dealer network with the addition of Geoff Britten at Lake Bolac, in the Western District.

Claas, through its importer Landpower Australia, has been steadily building the Harvest Centre network for about two years in targeted locations to build the serviceability of its equipment.

Other Claas Harvest Centres have been established at Narrabri and Wagga Wagga in NSW, and Katanning, in Western Australia.

Geoff's dealership will act as a hub for sales, service and support of Claas Lexion combine harvesters throughout western Victoria.

A Claas dealer for 30 years, Geoff said he was excited to be a part of the network.

"We've been in new premises for about two years now, so it's good timing to become a Claas Harvest Centre," Geoff said.

Landpower Australia said the dealership would focus on around-the-clock service to keep all makes and models of Claas harvesters at their peak capacity throughout the harvest season.

Lexion product manager Steve Reeves said dealerships such as Geoff's would ensure producers and contractors obtained maximum profitability from their investment in Claas machinery.

"Each Claas Harvest Centre represents a year-round commitment to our customers," he said.

"Just like our customers, Claas, Landpower and our Harvest Centre partners are family-owned businesses. We know the importance of long-term relationships and customer service."

Steve said it was vital high-performance machines such as the Lexion harvesters were kept on the go.

"These machines are exposed to incredibly high loads over a long period," he said.

"For this reason, we recommend a yearly service immediately after harvest or before the next, to ensure each machine is ready for the coming season."

Local farmers adopting latest technology

Compared to other countries in the SAARC region there is a high adaptation of advanced technologies in the local agriculture sector.

Operations Manager of CIC Seeds, Chandana Jayaratne told Daily News Business, that local farmers are rapidly adopting latest technologies in the agriculture sector compared to other countries in the region.

“They are always keen on latest technologies available to them and want updates on advanced technologies,” he said.

“Every day we find large numbers of farmers visiting us to learn new technologies in the agriculture sector. Farmers in the dry zone specially in the Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Mahaveli areas are quick to adopt the latest technologies,” he said.

Today, labour charges in the agriculture sector has increased and annually the labour force in the industry declines by 10 per cent. The new generation in the agriculture sector moves towards latest machinery and today farms need to be automated to make profits.

Not only individual farmers but also private sector companies in the agriculture sector have now switched to fully automated systems investing heavily due to lack of labour and high labour charges, he said.

Now there is a huge demand for local companies who import the latest agricultural machinery to Sri Lanka. Many farmers invest on machinery, he said.

Farmers now focus on using inputs, which have balanced amounts of organic and inorganic ingredients for better harvests. CIC Seeds is the largest seed paddy producer in Sri Lanka. It produces 20 per cent of the country’s seed paddy requirement. The company is equipped with most sophisticated seed-processing machines.

“Demand for compost has increased and many people in Colombo use compost for their home gardening. We manufacture 1,500 metric tonnes of compost per year and expect to increase the production to cater for the demand,” he said.
